GOOD’ NOT GOOD FOR BAUBLE QUEEN; ‘FIRM’ SHOULD BE BETTER

A mini-monsoon that erupted on March 25 in advance of the Santa Ana Stakes likely had an effect on Bauble Queen’s disappointing performance in the mile and an eighth race that was run on a “good” turf course.Firmer footing in Saturday’s Grade II Santa Barbara Handicap at 1 ¼ miles on turf should provide a means for improvement. So says Joe Talamo, who was aboard when Bauble Queen finished an even ninth in a field of 10 in the Santa Ana and who retains the mount on Saturday.“The turf was really soft after an absolute downpour,” Talamo recounted. “She just didn’t handle it. But she should be tough tomorrow. I think the mile and a quarter will suit her well.” Added trainer Eric Kruljac: “My filly was totally confused before the race, with that downpour hitting her in the face.”Prior to the Santa Ana, Bauble Queen won the Grade II Robert J. Frankel Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on Santa Anita’s firm turf course. The consistent daughter of Arch has a 3-2-2 record from nine starts for the Class Racing Stable of Joe Masino of Escondido. The field for the Santa Barbara, the ninth of 10 races: Hard Seven, Edwin Maldonado, 8-1; Cambina, Rafael Bejarano, 3-1; Glowing Spirit, Victor Espinoza, 20-1; Capital Plan, Brice Blanc, 5-1; Vamo a Galupiar, Mike Smith, 5-2; Bauble Queen, Joe Talamo, 9-2; and Camelia Rose, Joel Rosario, 2-1.
